About Emily
I was first elected to the Board of Aldermen (now called City Council) in 2013.
I grew up in Newtonville, and attended Newton Public Schools. Newton being a pretty great place to grow up, I chose to return here to raise my three boys; we live in the house I grew up in.
Before being elected I was very active in our community:
-
Founded www.greatnewtonschools.org to advocate for improvements to our schools, including Full Day Kindergarten.
-
Co-founded the pioneering parent/teacher/professional/student advocacy group, NewtonSTEM.
-
Created the Newtonville listserv to help Newtonville residents more easily engage with one another (email me to be added to it)
-
Collected signatures to help establish the Neighborhood Area Council (NAC) in Newtonville.
-
Coached Kindergarten soccer
Currently, in addition to being a City Councilor, I work full time as the Executive Director of the Charles River Watershed Association. Prior to that I served as Massachusetts Director for the Sierra Club, one of the nation’s largest grassroots environmental advocacy organizations.
I hold a Master of Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Vermont.
